Convex, Flat or Concave Bevels

The AX-40 Axe Jig lets you sharpen any kind of axe to a convex, flat, or concave bevel. Each jaw of the jig has two stops that lets you make a controlled movement between the stops to sharpen a convex bevel. You can also sharpen a slightly hollow grind by just using one of the stops as your point of reference. To get a completely flat bevel you sharpen on the side if a diamond grinding wheel using the MB-102 Multi Base.

Straight or Curved Edges

Outdoor axes and carving axes usually have a curved edge, while splitting mauls and carpenter’s axes usually have an almost straight edge. Since the stops on the axe jig are rounded, it is easy to follow the shape of the edge whether it is straight or curved. You’ll have nice and consistent bevels on all your axes!

Sharpening Angle by Use

With the AX-40 Axe Jig, you have complete freedom to choose the best sharpening angle for your axe using the WM-200 AngleMaster. The edge angle for an all-round axe for sports and outdoor use is bigger than for a carving axe, to be able to withstand more force. A splitting maul requires an even bigger edge angle.

Carving axes can be sharpened asymmetrically, with a smaller angle and larger bevel on the left-hand side (if you’re right-handed). That will make the axe cut and carve more easily because the cutting force is closer to the direction of cutting.

Extreme Versatility

Not only is the AX-40 Axe Jig versatile in the variety of types of axes it can sharpen, but it also offers a broad range in positioning when sharpening. You can either sharpen edge trailing (the edge in the same direction as the rotation of the grinding wheel) or edge leading (the edge against the direction of rotation), standing or sitting on either side of the machine. This makes it possible find what position best suits you and your axes.

Sharpen your knives

The HTK-1006 Hand Tool Kit includes all our jigs for sharpening the vast majority of knives in your home. This kit includes the KJ-45 Centering Knife Jig, which you can use to sharpen everything from regular kitchen knives to outdoor knives, even lawnmower blades. In a nutshell, a very versatile jig!

The kit also includes the KJ-140 Wide Centering Knife Jig. The wider clamp stabilizes the long and flexible blades of filleting knives, for example. This gives you an even bevel and angle along the entire blade, even on knives with flexible blades that are otherwise difficult to sharpen uniformly.

Also included is the SVM-00 Small Knife Holder to be used together with the KJ-45 Centering Knife Jig. These allow you to easily sharpen even your smallest knives.

For longer and taller tools

The US-430 Extended Universal Support is designed for anyone sharpening particularly long or tall tools. Sometimes your regular universal support just isn’t enough, either in length or in height. You might be sharpening a tall meat cleaver or a long knife, for example.

The SE-77 Square Edge Jig stop function, that prevents the tool slipping off the grinding wheel, doesn’t work with the US-430 Extended Universal Support as it is too long for that.

Fits your Tormek

The US-430 Extended Universal Support fits the Tormek T-8, Tormek T-7, Tormek T-4, Tormek T-3 and older models. The universal support is 436 mm (17 1/8″) long and 212 mm (8 3/8″) high. You can position it vertically for sharpening into the edge (edge leading), horizontally for sharpening away from the edge (edge trailing), or horizontally for honing with jigs. Like our other universal supports, the US-430 Extended Universal Support also works with the MB-102 Multi Base for sharpening on the side of diamond grinding wheels.

It comes with an integrated polish and is easy to use. You can also use your composite honing wheel for regular maintenance and to quickly regain sharpness when you don’t need to establish a new bevel. The CW-220 Composite Honing Wheel fits the Tormek T-8.

Cleaner honing

The CW-220 Composite Honing Wheel is suitable for use in clean environments as you don’t need to use honing compound. Instead, it has polish integrated into the composite material. You can deburr the edge quickly and get great results without getting yourself or your work station dirty!

Wet for more feel

You can wet the CW-220 Composite Honing Wheel with a little water for smoother honing. Use a sponge or cloth dipped in plain tap water. Hold it against the honing wheel with the machine running. This gives a softer feel to honing if you otherwise find it to be a bit aggressive.

It’s also used for routine maintenance to quickly regain sharpness when you don’t need to establish a new bevel. The LA-145 Leather Honing Wheel fits the Tormek T-4.

Restores the edge between sharpenings

The LA-145 Leather Honing Wheel is used with PA-70 Honing Compound. Honing your tool on the leather honing wheel after sharpening gives you maximum sharpness for your edge tool. Honing highly improves edge retention and provides excellent maintenance. You can quickly and easily realign the edge against the leather honing wheel between sharpenings. When the honing wheel is new, impregnate it with light machine oil before applying the honing compound so as to extend its service life and get the best performance.

Quality vegetable tanned leather

The leather on the LA-145 Leather Honing Wheel comes from the respected Tärnsjö Garveri tannery in Sweden. They’ve been tanning and manufacturing leather products for 150 years and are now one of the few tanneries to tan their leather using only natural vegetable products. The leather on Tormek’s leather honing wheels is both eco-friendly and of top quality.

This allows you to hone the inside of the edge on tools with a smaller radius or tighter angle.

Replace regular profiled honing wheels with narrower ones

LA-124 Set of Narrow Exchange Discs are an accessory for the LA-120 Profiled Leather Honing Wheel. You can easily replace the leather in your standard profiled leather honing wheels to be able hone your smallest woodturning gouges, carving gouges and V-gouges.

The LA-124 Set of Narrow Exchange Discs includes two leather honing wheels, one with a 2 mm (1/16″) radius and one with a 45° tip.

This is an advantage if you need to remove a lot of steel on a new tool to create your desired shape. However, be careful not to overheat the steel, as the tool may lose its temper.

Take control of your profiles

Regardless of the type of sharpening machine you use, the most difficult part of sharpening woodturning tools is accurately repeating the shape and sharpening angle. The BGM-100 Bench Grinder Mounting Set allows you to use the SVD-186 R Gouge Jig, SVS-50 Multi Jig, SVD-110 Tool Rest and TTS-100 Turning Tool Setter on your bench grinder. This allows you to easily repeat your sharpening, over and over again.

The Tormek water-cooled sharpening system is superior when it comes to sharpening virtually any tool in your workshop. That said, it’s no secret that major reshaping of a woodturning tool can be done faster on a bench grinder. Some woodturners who are dedicated Tormek users also have access to a bench grinder and use it together with the BGM-100 Bench Grinder Mounting Set for the first rough shaping operation.

With or without a Tormek machine

With the BGM-100 Bench Grinder Mounting Set, you can use the precise Tormek jigs throughout the grinding process. You no longer need to rely on trial and error to find the right shape using your bench grinder. Thanks to the TTS-100 Turning Tool Setter, you can quickly grind away material on the bench grinder and then move to your Tormek machine – without changing the jig settings – for the final sharpening and honing.

If you don’t yet have a Tormek machine, you can still take advantage of Tormek’s precise jig system on your bench grinder and easily create the desired shape and angle. The principle of setting the shape and sharpening angle is the same no matter which machine you use. If you later decide to expand your workshop to include a Tormek, then you already have the jigs you need for your woodturning tools.

Which grinding disc for the bench grinder?

Not all grinding discs are suitable for grinding edge tools with precision on a bench grinder. The standard mounted discs are often too hard, so they clog easily and lose their sharpening ability, causing the tool to overheat. Worn abrasive grains have to come off during grinding so that new grains are activated, otherwise the disc will clog and the abrasive grains will slip instead of cutting, increasing friction and generating heat.

Use an aluminum oxide disc with the right bonding – it mustn’t be too hard as this would cause burning, and it mustn’t be too soft as this would cause grooves. The wheel must be kept fresh and clean. Use a grinding disc dresser as recommended by your machine manufacturer.

The effect of heat on HSS steel

HSS steel can withstand much higher temperatures than carbon steel without losing its hardness. Nevertheless, the temperature in the outermost, very thin, apex of the edge can easily rise to a level that affects hardness and durability. Therefore, grind the tip of the edge carefully and don’t let it turn blue.

Overheating HSS steel may reduce hardness by as much as 4 HRC (Rockwell), which drastically shortens edge retention. If you cool the tool in water, avoid abrupt cooling from a high temperature as this can cause microcracks in the edge that are invisible to the eye.

Dealing with grinding dust

The fine dust from the grinding disc and steel particles from the tool can be hazardous to health. It’s best to use an extractor to prevent the dust contaminating the air. You have to use a separate dust extractor and not the same system as for the wood dust generated by your woodworking machines, as sparks could ignite the fine wood dust.

This results in a completely flat bevel, which is preferable in certain applications. The MB-102 Multi Base is fully adjustable for optimal settings for each tool and jig. It also converts the horizontal mounts to vertical, for easier access when sharpening knives edge trailing, and for guided honing using knife jigs (so-called Frontal Vertical Base or FVB).

Provides a completely flat bevel

When you sharpen on top of the curved part of the grinding wheel you get a slightly concave bevel. For some tools, a flat bevel is preferable. You can achieve this by sharpening against the flat side of your diamond grinding wheels.

Please note that sharpening on the side of the grinding wheel with the MB-102 Multi Base is recommended only with diamond grinding wheels. We don’t recommend it for sharpening with grindstones as they wear down and require truing, which isn’t possible on the side.

Fully adjustable to fit your specific tool

The MB-102 Multi Base has an adjustable joint which allows you to fix the sharpening position based on the optimal setting for each tool and jig. You can mount the MB-102 Multi Base in either the vertical or horizontal mounts on your machine, whichever works best for your tool, jig, or stance.

Sharpen knives edge trailing and guided honing with knife jigs

When mounting the MB-102 Multi Base horizontally on your Tormek machine, you can mount the universal support vertically in front of the machine. Basically, you convert the horizontal mounts on the machine to become vertical.

This provides better access for sharpening knives with the edge in the same direction as the rotation of the grinding wheel (edge trailing) and for guided honing using knife jigs. Many users prefer to sharpen edge trailing on the Japanese Waterstone, to make sure that the edge don’t catch the softer stone.
